Elephants like to bathe in water, mud, and dust. In a deep pool, elephants splash water with their trunks and feet. They like to dog-pile on each other. An elephant likes to splash onto its side until it is completely underwater and then stick its trunk up for air (like a snorkel). Bathing helps an elephant remove parasites from its skin. Later when an elephant sprays mud or dust on its head and body, this will dry to provide a protective covering from the sun and insects (like SPF 30).

At any age, elephants have a joyful time playing in water.
